The newest cordless drills on the market use Lithium-Ion batteries. Lithium-Ion battery technology provides more power than traditional cordless batteries in a smaller, lighter-weight drill. Also, this technology allows the battery to hold a charge for up to 18 months. That means the drill will likely be ready when the user needs it; a claim traditional cordless drills can't always make.

Traditional cordless drills run on NiCd or NiMH batteries. These technologies have been in the market for years and, as a result, are much less expensive than the newer Lithium-Ion drills.
